I started Curated Compositions in August 2020 as a way to share compositions—mine and others—with family, friends and coworkers. It’s mostly a collection of news from the week, but also includes some of my own thoughts, and other things of interest.
Originally, I sent out Curated Compositions as an email, then, in 2023 I started sending it out via Substack to streamline the creation and distribution process.
Content
In curating content for this newsletter, I strive to do the following:
Find informative articles discussing events that have occurred, versus “may” occur.
Rarely include political or opinion pieces; if I do include them it’s because they make a compelling, logical point that likely transcends politics.
Include articles with interesting data.
Deconflict articles on the same topic, though if there are multiple articles on the same topic that paint it in a different light, I will include those to provide differing perspectives.
Find quality content regardless of whether it’s behind a paywall. Many of the articles I include will be behind a paywall. However, if I come across two articles on the same topic that are similar in content, but one is behind a paywall and one is not, I will default to the one that is not behind a paywall.
Remind readers that all articles are biased (to include this newsletter), either by what they choose (or choose not) to discuss, or the words they use to discuss it.
Quantity
As of August 2023, I’ve sent out 127 newsletters with over 4,000 articles. As things progressed, the number of articles in each newsletter increased. I realize that sometimes less is more…and, yes, sometimes it is, but generally speaking, I strive to ensure that each newsletter is informative across a number of topics—I don’t go searching for articles to fill each topic each week, but if something is legitimately informative I won’t leave it out just because the newsletter might be longer. On the other end of the spectrum, some weeks just don’t have a lot of interesting stuff (looking at you week #127), so they’re just shorter.
If you find value in this newsletter, I hope you’ll subscribe.
